Marina Promenade

As part of Cork City Council’s wider Marina Promenade redevelopment, this project focused on creating a series of public-facing information boards, maps, and illustrations that helped visitors engage with the site’s natural, historical, and recreational significance. The wider promenade scheme transformed the 1.8 km riverside route into a major pedestrian and cycling amenity linking Centre Park Road to Blackrock Village.

The aim was to translate environmental and heritage information into an accessible and visually engaging interpretation system, encouraging visitors to connect more deeply with the Marina’s ecology, history, and public realm improvements.

Information boards

I designed a series of interpretive information boards highlighting local flora, fauna, and key historic structures that were carefully retained and restored during the redevelopment.

Working across InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, I developed a visual system that balanced clarity, accessibility, and engagement, ensuring the boards were easy to navigate for a broad public audience while complementing the wider streetscape and park environment. The design needed to support both education and wayfinding, inviting visitors to pause, explore, and connect with the surrounding landscape.

Maps

Alongside the interpretation boards, I developed a set of site maps based on CAD source material, translating technical base plans into clear, user-friendly public guides.

This included a dedicated playground map designed to feel approachable and intuitive for families and children, alongside wider promenade maps that helped visitors navigate key features, access points, and points of interest along the route. The focus was on transforming complex technical information into legible, visually appealing navigation tools.

Illustrations

To support the information system, I created a suite of bespoke illustrations featuring local tree species, butterflies, and significant heritage structures including the folly and the boathouse / ice house.

These illustrations were developed to add character and visual interest while reinforcing the Marina’s ecological and cultural identity. Designed as a reusable visual library, they helped create a cohesive language across the wider interpretation and mapping system.
